Looking for plants which tolerate most conditions, and don’t require a lot of special attention? Try some of our “tough plants”! The plants which fit this category seem to handle abuse fairly well, and can adapt to a variety of conditions, such as low light. These plants also do not require a lot of watering. Try some of these.Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant) - A durable upright plant with wide dark green leaves, which handles a variety of conditions.
Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen, Silver Queen, Emerald Beauty) - These come in a variety of sizes, and shades of green. Many new varieties have been developed over the past few years, adding new shapes and looks.
Sanseviera (Snake Plant, Mother-In-Law’s Tongue) - These also come in a variety of sizes, and can be grown indoors or outdoors. They require very little watering if indoors, as they hold most of their water for some time.
Pothos (Devil’s Ivy) - Probably the most common houseplant. This plant tolerates most conditions, and can be placed nearly anywhere in your home.
Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (“ZZ”) - This plant has thick fleshy leaves and naturally glossy leaves. It isn't a plant that you're going to find in your local chain store, but the more upscale garden centers may carry it. Harder to find, but well worth the effort.
All of these "tough plants" are a great place to start when learning to grow plants indoors. The one condition most of these plants do not tolerate is direct sunlight, so keep this in mind.
